What is Nummular Eczema?

Nummular eczema is one type of eczema. It is an allergy-related disorder. People with nummular eczema develop itchy, coin-shaped spots or patches on their skin.

Causes, Incidence, and Risk Factors

The actual causes of nummular eczema are unknown. It is mostly seen in case of people who have a family history of allergies, asthma, and atopic dermatitis.

This type of eczema is uncommon in comparison to other eczema types. This eczema is most prevalent in elderly men.

Some things can make the problem worse. If the person with nummular eczema has dry skin, then this condition will become worse. Environmental irritants can trigger outbreaks of nummular eczema or worsen the condition. Stress is another factor that can increase the severity of eczema. Sudden temperature changes can cause this problem.

Symptoms

There are some very common symptoms that appear in case of nummular eczema. Such symptoms include

  1. Coin shaped skin lesions are seen on the arms and legs of the individual who is suffering from the problem. These lesions may also spread to the middle of the body. In severe case, they may ooze and become crusty.
  2. Itchiness is a very common symptom of this type of eczema. Itching can be continuous and severe. Continuous itching will worsen the situation.
  3. This type of eczema problem will leave your skin scaly and raw.
  4. You will also notice skin redness and inflammation in case of such type of eczema problem.

Signs and Tests

It is very important to visit the doctor immediately for treatment of this type of eczema problem. The doctor will be able to diagnose the problem just by looking at the skin. He may also ask the patient about the family medical history. In some cases, a skin biopsy may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment

It is very important to avoid all the triggers that can increase the infection. These triggers can make the symptoms worse. Some of the common triggers of nummular eczema are wool, lanolin, and certain foods.

Unlike treatment of other eczema problems, it is not necessary to take frequent baths in this case of this type of eczema. Too much  bathing and use of soap can result in dry skin. Dry skin can make this condition worse.

The person with nummular eczema can use different types of lotions, moist bandages, and creams to alleviate symptoms. They will help to reduce inflammation, itching, dryness besides soothing the dry, scaly areas on the skin. However, you should use medicines only if your doctor prescribes them.

If symptoms are severe, the person may also use some prescription skin ointments containing tar, corticosteroids, or immunosuppressive drugs. These medicated treatments should be used only after recommendation by your doctor. In some rare cases, if the severity is excessive, the doctor may prescribe highly powerful corticosteroids which can be taken orally or as injections.
